Chart Summary

A graph from the Southern Poverty Law Center shows the fluctuation in anti Islamic hate crimes incidents from 1995 to 2008. The graph shows the incidents were at a stable rate of 21-32 between the years of 1995-2000. There was a 481 spike in anti Islamic hate crimes in 2001. This information would suggest that the spike in anti Islamic hate crimes could have been related to the 9/11 attacks. After 2001 the incidents dropped drastically to an average of 159-105 between the years of  2002-2008. One possible conclusion to draw is that after the 9/11 propaganda died down so did the hate crimes but never reduced to the amounts shown in the years of  1995-2000. What is unclear is the exact amounts of Islamic hate crimes. The graph gives us numbers but not specifics, it doesn't let us know if its in thousand, hundred thousands or millions. So i would say that this graph is inaccurate. But I can relate this graph to what happened to Zeitoun after Katrina. Zeitoun was racially profiled and accused of being a terrorist because he stayed behind after a mandatory evacuation was in effect. He was treated like a terrorist because of his race. I would like to know if the detainment of Islamic citizens after Katrina was factored into this graph because in the book they refer to document issued by the Homeland Security that terrorist groups would take advantage of the disastrous situation and launch attacks before, after and during the hurricane. This leads me to believe that there were probably more anti- Islamic incidents after Katrina and the detainment and torture on the Islamic detainees should be factored into this graph.
