Chart Summary

A graph from the Southern Poverty Law Center shows the fluctuation in anti Islamic hate crimes incidents from 1995 to 2008. The graph shows the incidents were at a stable rate of 21-32 between the years of 1995-2000. There was a 481 spike in anti Islamic hate crimes in 2001. This information would suggest that the spike in anti Islamic hate crimes could have been related to the 9/11 attacks. After 2001 the incidents dropped drastically to an average of 159-105 between the years of  2002-2008. One possible conclusion to draw is that after the 9/11 propaganda died down so did the hate crimes but never reduced to the amounts shown in the years of  1995-2000. What is unclear is the exact amounts of Islamic hate crimes. The graph gives us numbers but not specifics, it doesn't let us know if its in thousand, hundred thousands or millions. So i would say that this graph is inaccurate. But I can relate this graph to what happened to Zeitoun after Katrina. Zeitoun was racially profiled and accused of being a terrorist because he stayed behind after a mandatory evacuation was in effect. He was treated like a terrorist because of his race. I would like to know if the detainment of Islamic citizens after Katrina was factored into this graph because in the book they refer to document issued by the Homeland Security that terrorist groups would take advantage of the disastrous situation and launch attacks before, after and during the hurricane. This leads me to believe that there were probably more anti- Islamic incidents after Katrina and the detainment and torture on the Islamic detainees should be factored into this graph.

Zeitoun Quote Sandwich

Hey readers, its Fatima and will be showing different instances that self preservation was displayed in the book Zeitoun by Dave Eggers. Self preservation it when one protects and/or prepares against distruction, harm or displacement. Zeitoun notices that his house is flooding and begins to move all possessions that he can carry to the second floor of his home (Eggers 86). Zeitoun saves his photo albums to preserve memories for his family. Zeitoun goes on to save all the books and the encyclopedias for his children. This shows us that Zeitoun wasn't only saving possessions he was saving the photos albums to preserve memories that would be lost if they were damaged. It also shows use that he is trying to preserve his children s education by saving all the books, including the encyclopedias. We can also see the idea of self preservation occur again when Kathy, Zeitoun's wife starts to contemplate what life would be like without her husband and how she would go about making a life with herself and children (Eggers 192). One example is when she considers moving to Syria where Zeitioun's family lives and how easy it would be for her to adapt to life there. Another example is when Kathy weighs the option of Ahmaad (Yuko's husband) being a father figure for her children, in the absence of her husband. She shows self preservation by trying to figure out the next steps she must take to bring a sense of normality to her kids and herself, if Zeitoun is indeed deceased.

Zeitoun Summary

Hey guys, its Fatima and I will be making a claim that Zeitoun was a martyr for his religious beliefs while referencing for the book Zeitoun by Dave Eggers. In the book Zeitoun, Eggers talks about how alive and full of purpose he felt after saving five people within his first day after Katrina hit New Orleans. Eggers writes that Zeitoun "felt compelled to stay by a power beyond his own reckoning" (106). This means that Zeitoun felt that it was in God's plan that he stayed in the city to help stranded citizens and others in need. I believe that he trusts so much in his religious beliefs of helping thy neighbors that he was willing to risk his safety and stay in a city that he knew was full of danger.
